The police draw their own operational boundaries, which do not coincide with the statistical areas (DeSO and RegSO) that our data is based on. The areas are, however, roughly comparable in population. The statistics below refer to the statistical areas closest to the police delineation and should be read as an indication, not as figures for exactly the area the police designated.
Our safety score is based on reported crimes per resident. That measures something different from the police classification, which concerns criminal influence on the local community, parallel structures and reluctance to take part in legal proceedings. The metric is also geographically skewed: crimes are counted where they are reported but divided by the people who live there, which inflates city centres and retail districts and deflates residential areas. Placing that figure next to the police assessment would mislead, so we leave it out.
The police do not rank areas by danger. The 8 areas in Göteborg listed above are those designated in the December 2025 assessment of vulnerable areas — a judgement about criminal influence on the local community, not about risk to individuals.
In a vulnerable area, criminals influence the local community in ways tied to the area's social situation. A particularly vulnerable area additionally shows a general reluctance to take part in legal proceedings, parallel social structures and difficulty for the police to carry out their duties. The situation there is described as acute.
