The safety index is based on reported crime per DeSO area (2024–2025 average), measured against how many people actually spend time there: residents, one third of the daytime population and an estimate of visitors based on the number of nearby restaurants and bars. This gives city centres and nightlife areas, where many people spend time but few live, a fairer figure. The index measures reported crime — not how safe people feel, and not the police assessment of vulnerable areas.
Alvhem-Hålanda has the highest safety index in Ale (78 out of 100), followed by Södra Älvängen and Nol. The ranking is based on reported crime relative to residents and daytime population.
